Plagiarism in Rap

Image
This week, I found it really interesting to learn about the role of plagiarism and sampling in the Hip Hop world in Hess’s, “Was Foucault a plagiarist? Hip-hop sampling and academic citation” . I remember hearing on the radio or various news sources things about celebrities getting upset about their “names and likenesses” being used in rap or hip-hop songs but I never thought that one could plagiarize rap music. They brought up a good point that in writing such as essays and books you can cite and give credit where credit is due and there is not an easy way to do something such as that. The artist could give credit on their cover or in their title of the song but there is not a proper/accepted way that is allowed such as MLA. I do not think it is fair and I could see something happening in the near future that would help singers.  https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/817863166784901126/eXLh5-Fg.jpg

I had never really pondered the idea that music is built off of and inspired by other music. That is how different genres appear and develop. And, with that being said, two songs about different ideas with the same genre could be so similar and the artists could have no idea. There is a very grey area when it comes to what is original and what is not. Sure lyrics are easier to tell if one is copyrighted but beats, melody’s, and tunes are a lot harder. And now, in our day and age sound cloud and remixes and covers are very popular and widespread. What gives someone permission or the right to use others ideas? How do you know if your idea for song is actually as original as you think it is?

Reddit

Air Command As it is national suicide awareness  reading , I found it very fitting for our reading to be on how technology has been working to fight against suicide. I do not have much experience using reddit but have started to look into it more now that it has been brought up several times in my esociety class. It is genius that they have utilized such an easily acceptable, user friendly platform to help reach out to those struggling. Having as many outlets and resources available is so important as feeling alone is one of the major symptoms of those who end up committing suicide. It connects people with others who are willing to listen and give advice. It is also not always professionals so it could be more personal and less clinical. But, this thread is heavily monitored by professionals due to the seriousness of the situation and to make sure that trolls and other people who are not doing a service are not unececarily involved or harming people in need.

Making it Up as We Go Along

As a kid, I was always the one to be enrolled in every after school club/activity so my mom could have some extra time to get dinner ready and work. With that being said, one of the activities I was enrolled frequently over the years of my elementary age. One of the activities/lessons that would always come up would be improv. I always found it very fun to play the common game that starts off with one person each saying a sentence that would create a funny story by the time everyone had a chance to have a turn. I never really put two and two together to think about how we use improv everyday. From conversations with friends, teachers, classmates, to thinking on the fly to make up an excuse. It is something present in our daily lives. We think before we speak but, only to an extent. Most of it just flows out since we have so much practice unlike how much thought I would have to put into each word and sentence in my spanish class because I am not fluent.
