Final Blog

Upon reflecting on my time as an e Society 211 student, I have come to the conclusion that I have in fact learned many lessons and skills. This being one of my first four classes as a college student, I have learned how to stay on top of my studies even if there was not always something to turn in every night. In highschool if there was reading, I never really did it unless it was for a test or a quiz. But, in college, you need to do the assigned reading or else you are a fish out of water in class the next day and in this class in particular, you need to have a grasp on the reading in order to be an asset to your group. In addition, I have also learned how to communicate and meet outside of class with a group and you cannot just allocate jobs and hope for the best. I would have to say that I think this , and this are my two best posts. I could not narrow it down to two replies I liked the best, I think this is partly because I feel like I rushed them and if I could change anything, I...

Updates on out Wiki "Stub"

Image
To expand on what we learned last week about Wikipedia, this week in class we checked back in on our pages that we edited and were to attempt to add an image. My group in particular was shocked to discover that the page we edited was still fully intact. This was shocking considering our topic had to do with suicide and was a very sensitive topic. And in addition, we added a whole other category of information as it was originally only gothic music’s effect on suicide and we added 500 words on how country music has similar effects. We did notice that after we posted, our page was flagged for review. I think no action has been made so far due to the fact the page was a “stub” and not really developed due to lack of interest and it was an obscure topic. We really struggled with adding a photo due to the reuse rules and it seems difficult to keep an image up there unless you own the rights to the image. Wikimedia

WikiWiki

This week in class we learned and got hands on experience with using wikipedia to collaborate. This website is always my first stop when doing a basic search when I have any curiosity about literally any topic. Whether it comes to doing background for a research paper, settling a debate between friends, or shear curiosity. It is such an easy accessible site that gives quick important facts and information. Even more relatable to this course, it is 100% based off of online collaboration. Users can upload and edit the information. In class, our groups were even given the opportunity to edit a “stub” or an incomplete page. The information is closely monitored to ensure the credibility of the website and the information on each page. Although in grade school and even high school, it was drilled into me by my teachers that wikipedia is not a credible source due to its collaborative nature. But, after some research and what I've learned in esoc 211, everything added it is so closely mon...

1000 word blog post

Hi, my name is Emma Ciulla, I am from Phoenix, Arizona and this is my first semester that the University of Arizona. Although I am technically a freshman, I was lucky enough to attend Xavier College Preparatory, an all girls Catholic school and St. Thomas the Apostle for 1-8 th grade. So I am very used to a very rigid and strict learning environment. I say I am lucky because I had the opportunity to take dual enrollment courses with Rio Solado community college while I carried out my four years. I only had to take 1 online communications class outside of my regular course work at Xavier. In doing this, I was able to graduate with my Associates in Arts degree 2 weeks before I graduated from high school. This makes me technically a Junior at the U of A. I really really wanted to take advantage of all the extra time I would have available. I am in Greek life and have decided to pursue the undergraduate law program but, would will still have too much time on...

Online Activism

Image
This week in class, we explored online movements as a class and then chose our topics for our second collaborative assignments. I am excited to do this project because my group’s topic is teen suicide, a very serious topic that many people are affected by but, can be uncomfortable to discuss. There are so many resources and organizations that have put out helpful resources, research, and data. Many celebrities that have spoken out about how this cause has affected them personally. To go more into what we discussed in class, it was the black lives matter movement. I was very surprised to see how many different resources our class could come up with. I was under the naive impression that there were maybe only a couple organizations that had that cause. There were hundreds of organizations and companies that are supporters and advocates. It really goes to show how easily one can become involved. Black Lives Matter

Online Gaming

This week in class we discussed online gaming  and how the game by the company, Riot, League of Legends has been working with researchers to uncover the trash-talk and toxic behavior present in the game. I am personally not very well versed in the world of gaming, as my experience does not go past Wii sports, a pretty menial, family game. But, I was shocked and in a way disappointed to learn about the negativity that exists in such a recreational, fun activity. It was fascinating to learn that when the game did finally decide to issue warnings against such behavior, there was less of this negativity. It was even more interesting to learn that the one of the more influential ways to stop this was to use a red font. This truly goes to show the malleability and ability to influence the way human brain with such a simple thing.  https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7501/15839810880_6d8e9f00db_b.jpg
