More specifically ours was over Cool Runnings . As a freshman, this was my first time seriously working. In the past I had been babied, their were certain “busy work” tasks involved in the project, but this time, I had been forced to take initiative on my own to do my share and help the machine that was our group run smoothly. There was no one here to hold my hand and tell me to have what due by when. I was surprised with how swimmingly our project conducted itself. With a few minor set backs, we were able to accomplish our goals seemingly pain free. It really showed myself that I can conduct myself as a real adult and despite how it may feel, I am in fact ready for tasks such as these!

Plagiarism in Rap

Image
This week, I found it really interesting to learn about the role of plagiarism and sampling in the Hip Hop world in Hess’s, “Was Foucault a plagiarist? Hip-hop sampling and academic citation” . I remember hearing on the radio or various news sources things about celebrities getting upset about their “names and likenesses” being used in rap or hip-hop songs but I never thought that one could plagiarize rap music. They brought up a good point that in writing such as essays and books you can cite and give credit where credit is due and there is not an easy way to do something such as that. The artist could give credit on their cover or in their title of the song but there is not a proper/accepted way that is allowed such as MLA. I do not think it is fair and I could see something happening in the near future that would help singers.  https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/817863166784901126/eXLh5-Fg.jpg

Remix

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/eb/Maroper_Music.jpg In RiP!: A Remix Manifesto , the film highlights and explains the complications behind copyright issues in the music industry. I had never really pondered the idea that music is built off of and inspired by other music. That is how different genres appear and develop. And, with that being said, two songs about different ideas with the same genre could be so similar and the artists could have no idea. There is a very grey area when it comes to what is original and what is not. Sure lyrics are easier to tell if one is copyrighted but beats, melody’s, and tunes are a lot harder. And now, in our day and age sound cloud and remixes and covers are very popular and widespread. What gives someone permission or the right to use others ideas? How do you know if your idea for song is actually as original as you think it is?
